Notes for Edmund FREEMAN
1967Apparently Edmund and Keziah migrated with their large family from Barnstable Co MA on Cape Cod to Wyndham Co CT in what is now Mansfield, possibly having inherited the land from Edmund's father. The home that they established was in the South Parish of that town.
Notes for Kezia (Spouse 1)
1968Note: Stephen Skeffe's will names "granddaughter Kezia." It is almost certain that she is not a legitimate child of any of Stephen's children. It is virtually certain she is the Kezia who married Edmund Freeman of Sandwich. Frederick Freeman, Freeman Genealogy, 1875, p. 45 calls her Kezia Presbury but does not name her parents. One theory is that she is the daughter of Stephen Presbury before he married Deborah Skeffe. If their gravestones are correct this seems very unlikely. If Stephen Skeffe was age 58 when he died 17 May 1730, then he was born about 1672. If Keziah was age 77 when she died 20 Apr 1764, she was born about 1686 (g.s. Old Storrs Cemetery, Mansfield, CT). This would make Stephen a father at age 16, almost unheard of in those days. Note that Stephen did not name Kezia in his will. An alternative theory is that she is Deborah's illegitimate dau. Deborah woul have been 18 at the time of Keziah's birth and would not marry for another 7 years. Deborah's father does name Keziah in his will and almost certainly raised her.
