Notes for Joseph WALLIS
1875Elizabeth was taken captive by the Indians and redeemed by her husband ca. 1716. Joseph Wallis of Beverly, fisherman, stated on 19 March 1719/20 that Henry Thresher had lived on about 100 acres between land of John Wallis and Robert Standford, till killed by Indians.1876 Joseph and Elizabeth had no children who survived to adulthood, and possibly none at all. John Black of Beverly, husbandman, on 7 July 1716 gave two acres in Beverly that he had bought from Isaac Davis, "in considerations of good will toward my son-in-law Joseph Wallis, Beverly, fisherman, and good will and affection for my daughter Elizabeth Wallis, wife of Joseph Wallis who had great charges and expense lately to ransom his wife out of the hands of Indian enemies."1877
John Black of Beverly, husbandman, for £40, "paid by my son-in-law Joseph Wallis of Beverly," sold two acres of land there, "bounded south by land I conveyed to my son Nathaniel Black, north by my son [in-law] Wallis, east by land of Thomas Woodberry, late of Beverly; west by land of Joseph Bisson" on 13 March 1720/21; Joshua Bisson was a witness.1878 The next day, in the presence of Suasnnah Wallis (no relationship stated), who signed by mark, Joseph Wallis of Beverly, mariner, sold to Joshua Basoon [Bisson], Sr., of Beverly, joiner, for £25, one acre, more or less, that he had purchased of John Black.1879
Elizabeth Wallis, widow, daughter of John Black of Beverly, sold two acres of land there to Syman Lovett, Jr., tailor on 1 May 1727.1880
No record of Elizabeth Wallis's death was found in Danvers or Beverly, but a deed dated 6 July 1761 provides a clue. On that date Hannah Prince of Danvers, widow, sold to israel Bisson, Beverly mariner, a dwelling house, barn and two acres of land; quitclaims were given by Joshua Bisson, joiner, Anthony Wood, weaver, and his wife Elizabeth Wood, and Martha Gray, widow, "really thinking it was the mind and will of our aunt Elizabeth Wallis, late of Danvers" [that Hannah Prince should have the property].1881 On 10 July 1761, Rebecca Foster of Beverly, widow, for 42s sold to israel Bisson, mariner, her interest in about one acre in Beverly that had been the estate of her brother Joseph Wallis, late of Beverly, intestate; Andrew Ellinwood of Beverly and his wife Elizabeth agreed to the sale; witnesses were Anthony Wood and Mary Elenwood.1881
