(Letter on file in the Minnesota Historical soc. dept of Hennepin Paper Mills to Jeanne Loeb, g-grandaughter of John W. Shepard);

"In regards to your request for information on the Shepard Family, enclosed are copies of all that I could find in our archives. (You may want to write the historical society to see what is in their file - The Morrison County Historical Society - PO Box 239, Little Falls, MN 56345) The name of Frank H. Shepard came as no surprise to me as I well remember researching his tenure as superintendent at Hennepin paper mill when I wrote that company's history a few years ago. However, a thorough search of old newspapers has revealed that his parents did not die here in Little Falls or Morrison County and found that John Shepard died near Spokane, Washington, and was buried in Minneapolis. (note; actually buried in Plainwell, MI) Enclosed are copies of what I did find, along with a copy of that Hennepin Paper Company History, and there is a charge of $5. for those items & postage, payable to the Morrison County Historical Society (we do not charge a research fee but accept donations payable to same).

Enclosed are the following copies: Obituary for John Shepard, transcribed from microfilm of Little Falls Herald, August 15, 1902 (our microfilm reader doesn't make copies and we are missing Aug. 1902 papers for the local daily newspaper), and note that he died on a ranch near Spokane and was buried in
Minneapolis; copies from the Little Falls Daily Transcript regarding Frank Shepard and his son Charles during tenure at Hennepin Paper Co., from March 29, August 21, and Aug. 23, 1897; Jan. 20, 1899, July 20, 1901, Jan. 27 & 28, and June 12, 1902; and copy of Hennepin Paper Co. History (Frank is on pages
14 to 20). I searched all the January to June 1902 volumes we have of the Daily Transcript but found no other Shepard items.

From these items it appears that Frank came to Little Falls from Sparta, Wisc., in March 1897; Frank and son Charles worked at Hennepin until late January, 1902, when Charles is leaving for Montana where Frank's wife had already moved-Frank was replaced as Hennepin's' superintendent by the end of
January, 1902, and he moved--with family--sometime soon after to Fairchild, Washington; Frank had taken charge of a paper mill in Floriston, California, by June, 1902; his father died in August 1902 near Spokane, Washington. I did not find any other items regarding John Shepard's death, and made a very
through search of the January-Feb.-March newspapers of 1902 but found no obit for Margaret Harper Shepard, but assume she may also be buried in Michigan near her husband (I have no idea which cemetery in Michigan that John was buried in). I have not seen the Verbal family history but it is surely in error.

I hope this information will be of help to you with your research, and if you need any further assistance, feel free to contact us again at any time."
