Notes for John STICKNEY
165JOHN STICKNEY, the third son of William and Elizabeth, was born in Rowley, 1, 4, 1640, m. there June 9, 1680, Hanah Brocklebank.


It appears from the Town records of Rowley, that JOHN STICKNEY had laid out to him, May 20, 1667, a lot on Hog Island Marshes. Jan. 16, 1673, he was appointed Overseer for the west end of the town.


He was one of the twelve men impressed from Rowley, Nov. 29, 1675, by Capt. Samuel Brocklebank to serve in King Philip’s War. He was in the bloody action of Dec. 19, 1675, and assisted in the capture of the Narragansett Fort.


"March 24, 1675. Military Service Dr. to JOHN STICKNEY under Major Appleton, 02: 14: 00." [See Account Book of John Hull, the Treasurer of the Colony.]


He was also in the fight with the Indians at Sudbury, April 21, 1676, where his Captain, Samuel Brocklebank (whose daughter he afterwards married), was slain by the Indians.


In 1733 there was granted to JOHN STICKNEY and others, for their service in King Philip’s War - "Narragansett No. 1," now Buxton, Maine. In the Boston Post-Boy and Advertiser of Nov. 18, 1767, his heirs with others were notified of having unpaid taxes due on this land, his amt. being £1 0 3 1/2.


In 1677 there was laid out to him in Rowley, a lot of 15 acres on the North-east of Hunsley Hill; also "To Leaftenant Stickney 11 acres marked J. S." He was one of a committee to lay out land to Daniel Wicom 20, 10, 1677, and Jan. 22, 1677, one of a committee to see who were entitled to freeholds in the town. He was then the owner of three.


Dec. 10, 1678. He took the "Oath of Allegiance before the Honored Major Gen’ll Denison, Esq’r." He was on the Jury of the Court of Sessions, Mch. 30, 1679, Mch. 28, 1682, and Mch. 1681.


He with "John Pickard, Ez. Northen, Daniel Wicom, Ezekiel Mighill and Thomas Lambert" were chosen by the town, Feb. 21, 1680, "to lay out land in West and Ox pasture." In 1680 to "Leaftenant JOHN STICKNE as his right was granted 21 acres of land by Mrs. Dole’s, Sam’l Bointon, Nicholas Jackson and Jachin Raynor’s"


JOHN STICKNEY was elected a Selectman of Rowley, May 21, 1688, also May 6, 1689, at which time a meeting was held and Deacon John Pearson, Jr., and Quartermaster Daniel Wicom, were chosen to represent Rowley in the General Court. (At the same time Samuel Stickney, brother of John, was chosen representative from Bradford.)


On a Tax list of Jan. 9, 1691, of an amount of £394, 17s 5d. "Lieut. JOHN STICKNEE" quota was £5 2s. There were 135 persons taxed. He was then one of the Selectmen.


The estate of Capt. Samuel Brocklebank (his father-in-law) was settled by an agreement among the heirs, June 17, 1691, to which is attached the autograph signature of "JOHN STICKNEE." [Essex Probate.]


"At a Meeting of the inhabitants of Rowley Feb. 25, 1694-5 Capt. Daniel Wicom, Lieut. JOHN STICKNEY, Corp’l John Hopkinson and Joseph Boynton were chosen to view the house that was Mr. Ezekiel Rogers’, to see whether there were any timber or anything belonging to said house that might be useful towards building another house for the town, and to make a return to the town." "March 1695-6, Voted to build a new Meeting house, and Capt. Daniel Wicom, Lieut. John Dresser and Corp’l John Bointon were chosen to view Baveriah (Beverly) and Wennom (Wenham) Meeting house, and make return to this town whatsoever they see and what they aprehend may be suitable for this Town." This was the second Meeting-house erected in Rowley, the first child baptized in it was Andrew, Nov. 26, 1693, son of Ensign Andrew Stickney, a brother to Lieut. JOHN STICKNEY.


March 2, 1694. He was a Constable of Rowley. Court Records state that "March 1695, Constable JOHN STICKNEY was fined 6s 8d, for not returning the warrant for Jurors seasonably, whereby the Court was much hindered." April 13, 1697. He was on the Grand Jury of the Court of Sessions. He was chosen Tythingman Mch. 14, 1698-9, Mch. 16, 1702-3, and Mch. 12, 1705-6.


May 8, 1701. "JOHN STICKNEY of Rowley and Hannah his wife, William Dole of Newbury and Mary his wife for £24, that is £12 a piece sell to John Clark of Rowley, 26 acres of woodland in Rowley in ye Commons at the West end of the town and on N. W. side of Long Meadow as recorded on the Town Books of Rowley to Capt. Sam’l Brocklebanke our father-in-law and fell to us as part of our wives portion out of Capt. Brocklebank estate." Wit. Dec. 4, 1707. JOHN STICKNEY, Carpenter, of Rowley, with consent of Hannah his wife "for £5 of silver money, sell to Ebenezer Foster, yeoman of Rowley," "One freehold or free comon lying in the Township of Rowley." Wit. Nathan Barker, Sam’l Platts. Signed,

Lieut. JOHN STICKNEY died in the year 1709, leaving the following Will.


"Will of JOHN STICKNEY of ye Town of Rowley, In ye County of Essex In New-England, being Weak of body but of Sound Understanding doe make this my last Will and Testament. In manner and form following.

First, I committ my Soul that gave it Mee In hopes of a happy resurrection thro’ ye power & Meritts of Jesus Christ my Dear Redeemer, and my Body to be decently interred In ye earth, and as for yt. outward estate yt. God hath given me I dispose of as followeth.

First, I doe give my Wife power to sell the Wood Lott by Deacon Palmores field for and toward finishing of new house.

To my beloved wife Hannah I doe give her one half of all my lands and housing to improve during her Widowhood and one half of all my Moveable estate to be att her dispose.

And to my Eldest son Samuell I doe give ten pounds more yn. my youngest son John if he liveth and carry on his Mother’s husbandry, until he come of the age of twenty-one years.

And to each of my two sons Samuel and John I doe give them one third more yn. any of my daughters, and to all my daughters I doe make them equall one with another, and I doe make my beloved wife Hannah my Whole and Sole Executrix to this my Last Will and Testament.

In witness hereof I have Sett my hand and Seale this Twenty Sixth day of February, Seventeen hundred and eight, nine (1708-9).

"Division of the Real Estate of Lieut. JOHN STICKNEY of Rowley, Dec’d according to his Will to ye Widow and among ye Children.

Imp. To the Widow half ye House Lott on both sides the way, ye easterly side of ye Lott with ye easterly end of ye house and barne. The westerly end of ye 4 acre Lott near ye Ox pasture gate. 2 3/4 acres of land in ye Comon field by Nelson’s hill. One Ox gate in ye Ox pasture lying at ye northern end of ye Lott. A piece of Salt Marsh called Dickensons Marsh. Cow Bridge Marsh. One freehold on ye Comon and one-fifth of a freehold.

To Samuel Stickney the elder son one half of ye home lott on both sides of ye way, with ye westerly end of ye house and barne, one half a freehold on the common, one acre of meadow in Batchelders Meadow and 2/3 of an Ox gate.

To John Stickney ye youngest son, one half of ye 4 acre lot in ye Ox pasture. Hog Island Lot of Salt Marsh, one acre of woodland att Hunsly Hill and 1/4 of a freehold on the Common.

To Hannah Sawer ye eldest daughter 3 acres of woodland at Hunsly Hill, &c.

Hannah the wife of JOHN STICKNEY was adm. to the Church in Rowley, June 23, 1695, where their children were baptized.


Jan. 24, 1711-12. "Hannah Stickney widow and relict and executrix to the estate of Lieut. JOHN STICKNEY of Rowley, dec’d having power given me by his Will to sell 15 acres of woodland laid out to him being his second division of land, to finish ye frame of new house and in consideration of £30 of cost laid out and in worke laid out in ye s’d frame, sell unto my son-in-law Richard Dole of Newbury ye above 15 acres of land as laid out and bounded in Town Book of Records for land in Rowley, above said bounded, northerly, upland layd out as ye right of Jachin Rayner, and as trees are marked at ye four corners with J. S. in the southerly part of Rowley." [Essex Deeds, 25: 151.]


April 8, 1732. She, with Timothy Palmer and Jane his wife, all of Rowley, whom they call "our honored Mother," sell Richard Dole of Rowley, land in West end Ox pasture. [Ibid, 142: 296.]


July 9, 1740. She with Richard Dole and Elisabeth Dole of Rowley, Spinster, sell Eph. Nelson of Rowley "Fresh meadow ground in Batchellers meadow in Rowley." [Ibid, 80: 97.]


There are three different records of her death. The Rowley Records give it as Widow Stickney, corrected as Widow Hannah Stickney, and aged about 90 years. The Church Records of Byfield, where she might have died, give April 23, 1749, aged 90 years.
