277Mercy was the grandaughter of Bill Austin the famous Indian scout. Bill's son William was carried into captivity by the Indians while a small boy. He remained with them until he became a man and married a sister of the celebrated Chief Tecumseh. After his marriage he left the tribe and settled in Bath, ME where his daughter Mercy was born.

Austin. Benoni came to New Meadows, Brunswick, Maine by 1737, and went from there by 1774."
!CONFLICT: Info from Mrs. George Powers says Mercy is a gdau. of William
Austin, how ever from their ages, it weems likely that she was a g.gdau.
instead of gdau.

277At the age of 13, James had the honor of piloting the first ship that sailed up the Kennebec from Bath to Gardiner, ME. Two years later he enlisted in the Continental Army and served in the ranks until 1779.
277James and Mercy (Austin) Labree's first child was born Jun 18, 1783 (Mary). They moved to Monmouth about 1789 with her father, William Austin.
