!RESIDENCE: per "WOODWARD DESCENDANTS;" after settling immediately in Watertown, MA, RichardWoodward was admitted as a freeman on 2 Sep 1635, and was listed as among the earliest of the proprietors. It notes that, by 1642, he had a "homestall of twelve acres," in addition to being a grantee of nine additional acres. It also says he had, by 1644, a total of 360 acres, which were in what is now Boston. Ten acres were transferred to his son, George. Thirty-nine acres at Little Plain were sold to John Whitney (whose grandson would subsequently marry Richard's granddaughter.) On 8 Sep 1648,Richard Woodward, by then in Boston, purchased a Boston mill from a Holbrook family, selling it to William Aspinwall on 26 Dec 1648. Land that he once owned was later to be Lot 42 of Stoney Brook. Watertown, the place of settlement in America for the Woodward's, is now a suburb to the northwest of Boston. Research
Various Woodward Books: "Genealogies of the Families and Descendants of the Early Settlers of Watertown, Massachusetts, Including Waltham and Weston to which is Appended The Early History of the Town" by Henry Bond, M.D., vol. 2, Boston, Little Brown & Company, 1855.
My favorite is "Descendants of Richard Woodward, New England, 1589 - 1982" by Norma Slater Woodward. Probably still available from the author at Rte 2 box 739, Lake Butler, FL 32054.
Thomas R. Stedman published what he called a revised edition of Norma Slater Woodward's book under the title, "Descendants of Richard, Nathaniel, Robert and Henry Woodward of New England 1589 - 1996". Last I heard he was still trying to peddle them. His address is 12401 N. 22nd St., #H-304, Tampa, FL
33612-4630. This is mostly just a copy of Norma's book (I haven't happened to come upon any revisions, but certainly would not deny the existence of any), but the index is off, often by several pages, and is therefor often difficult to use. Besides Norma's book is much less expensive.
"Woodward/Woodard Ancestors of New England" by Lindsay S. Reeks, published in 1995 by Gateway Press, Inc. may well still be available from the author at 2013 Westover Dr., Pleasant Hill, CA 94523. This shows a picture of a Woodward house in Waban (still standing in 1995). A book - WABAN - EARLY DAYS also has a picture of the Woodward Homestead, 1681, which it claims to be...."one of the oldest hereditary dwellings in America, if not the
oldest....."
Francis Jackson's "A History of the Early Settlement of Newton, County of
Middlesex, Massachusetts from 1639 to 1800 with a Genealogical Register of its Inhabitants Prior to 1800", Boston, 1854, has quite a bit of interesting information. Our common ancestor John Woodward is considered to have been the 31st settler of Newton. The current facsimile reprint was as recently as last month available from Heritage Books, Inc., 1540-E Pointer Ridge Place, Bowie, MD 20716.
J. Gary Woodward, 1212 Kingman St., Leavenworth, KS 66048 has compiled a listing of almost 2000 Woodward marriages (including Richard and John) in "Woodwards of Colonial America - Volume II, Woodard - Woodward Marriage Records", which he dated March, 1997, so ought to still be available.
