GEORGE B. GRAVES DIES - SECRETARY TO FORMER GOVERNOR HEART ATTACK VICTIM

Albany, 7 July - George B. Graves, 61, whose salary as secretary to former Governor Alfred E. Smith at one time exceeded that of the Governor himself, died unexpectedly at his home today. Members of the family said the death was caused by a heart ailment. Graves was the only man in the history of New York State to bear the title of "assistant to the Governor", which was bestowed upon him on January 12, 1927. In that capacity Graves received a salary of $12,000 - $2,000 more than the salary of Governor Smith. The Governor's salary was increased to $25,000 in 1928. Graves is survived by his wife, Mrs. Blanche McKenna Graves; two sons, Jack and George B., Jr., and two daughters, Evelyn and Carol, all of Albany. Private funeral services will be conducted at the home Friday.
